I could pick one of maybe four or five so-called shoegaze albums – the shoegaze sound is a big influence on me. I could pick My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, but Slowdive for me epitomise shoegaze better even than the Valentines. There were some factions of the media that treated Slowdive as a bit of joke – I remember them having a rough ride – but that idea of not being afraid to be pretentious, to be pompous, is important. I was the perfect age to be checking this stuff out, and still it means a lot to me.
