Dub pioneers reunite for whacked-out remix album
Lee “Scratch” Perry is firmly into the victory lap section of his career, a phase that does not always make for especially gripping music. But this May’s Rainford, produced by UK dub auteur Adrian Sherwood, was hailed as a return to form, and Heavy Rain
– an album of re-versions helmed by Sherwood accompanied by a suite of guests – feels similarly vital. The Wailers’ Vin Gordon accompanies Scratch’s gnomic pronouncements with trombone on “Rattling Bones And Crowns” and “Heavy Rainford”, while Sherwood and Brian Eno collaborate on a playful, perpetually morphing edit of Rainford’s “Makumba Rock” that is amusingly titled “Here Come The Warm Dreads”.
