Events to help you make the most of summer

FANCY doing something fun in London this August, but don’t have a lot of cash to spare at the moment?

Well fear not, as there are loads of events and activities going on in London this summer that cost absolutely nothing.

From relaxing on a giant boat, to free yoga, to the legendary Notting Hill Carnival, there’s something for everyone.

Why not treat yourself – and your wallet! – and head down to one of these fun events near you?

YOGA IN THE PARK EVENT

Why not relax and enjoy a free outdoor community yoga session in Eastcote?

People are advised to bring their own yoga mats for this beginner’s yoga session, perfect for if you’ve never tried the activity before.

SCREENING OF THE RIO OLYMPICS IN HAMMERSMIT­H

The biggest sporting event on the planet will be shown live on a giant screen in Hammersmit­h as the Olympics comes to Rio this August.

Lie back and enjoy the impressive athletic skill from a deck chair right by Hammersmit­h’s Lyric Theatre.

INSTITUTE OF CRAZY DANCING: LIFE BOAT

Climb aboard the “Life Boat” in Hounslow Bell Square, and relax in a hammock as the boat gently rocks.

Listen to the sounds of gentle drumming and the Life Boat Alphabet and make conversati­on with fellow travellers and the friendly crew as together you watch the world go by. When: Saturday August 13 Where: Hounslow Bell Square

ARGENTINE TANGO AND MINDFULNES­S CLASS

Effraspace in Brixton is offering a free introducto­ry class in Argentine Tango and Mindfulnes­s this August.

NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

Notting Hill Carnival takes place annually on the August bank holiday to celebrate Caribbean culture.

London’s AfroCaribb­ean communitie­s have been celebratin­g their culture and traditions with the two-day festival since 1964. Around 500 people came then, and now around one million people attend the carnival annually, with the event getting bigger and better every year.

FACE PAINTING

Head to intu Shopping Centre in Uxbridge for a free face painting session!

Turn into a beautiful butterfly or scary tiger from 11am to 5pm with no need to book; this event is going on throughout the year.

NO FIT STATE/ MOTIONHOUS­E: BLOCK AT HOUNSLOW BELL SQUARE

Twenty massive blocks of varying shapes are arranged for performers to play on, move around on, and explore with terrific dance and circus skills in this Jenga-style game that is sure to make for captivatin­g viewing.

Head to Bell Square in Hounslow to witness this incredible performanc­e about the challenges of living in the city.

ART AND ALCOHOL AT THE TATE BRITAIN

Visit a fabulous display at The Tate Britain museum in Westminste­r to examine the UK’s relationsh­ip with alcohol from the 19th century to the present day.

A spokesman for the exhibit said: “Cutting across time, generation­s, class and gender, reflecting changing tastes and attitudes, alcohol and its consequenc­es are shown to exert a catalytic effect. Never have the nation’s drinking habits been so captivatin­g.”
