“YOU’RE going to get it like Jo Cox.”

That was the threat made to Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry by a Hillingdon man, who has been jailed for eight weeks.

John Wombell, 58, of Cherry Orchard in West Drayton, called Ms Soubry’s constituency office in Beeston saying the Tory was “going to get it” like murdered MP Jo Cox, the Nottingham Post reports. Wombell made the phone call on November 13 last year – just 10 days before Thomas Mair was jailed for life for shooting and stabbing Labour MP Mrs Cox to death , a week before the EU referendum vote.

Metropolitan Police officers arrested Wombell on February 8 following an investigation.

He was charged on March 26 with one count of sending a message that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character – contrary to section 127 of the Communications Act 2003. He pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was sentenced to eight weeks behind bars.

He was also issued with a restraining order. Jo Cox was attacked in her constituency and later died from her injuries. Remain supporter Ms Soubry was targeted on Twitter weeks later, on December 2, by a user of the site asking someone to “Jo Cox” her.

The tweet, which misspelled her name, read: “Someone jo cox Anna sourby please”. The MP responded by saying: “This is what has happened to our politics. Tolerance & free speech must prevail.” Later she called the tweeter a “cowardly troll” who responded with “lol get jo coxed you old bint.” The tweets were reported to Nottinghamshire Police, which launched an investigation.
