A HILLINGDON animal sanctuary which had been run by the same man for four decades has been forced to close its doors for good.

Stan Atkins set up Pets Corner in the aptly named location of Petworth Gardens nearly 40 years ago and has been looking after a number of animals since then.

The local hero tended to the animals and allowed countless local children and adults to interact with them.

In recent years however, as his health declined, Stan was forced to rely on help from volunteers and donations to support the farm.

However it was announced on Monday that the farm would be closing its doors for good and that all animals were being taken to Nathan’s Farm in Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire.

A pig, two goats, four Shetland ponies and several chickens were taken to the 120-acre farm on Tuesday morning.

A Facebook Group titled “Friends of Pets Corner, Hillingdon” was set up in 2016 with an accompanying crowd-funding page to return Pets Corner to its former glory.

Volunteers helped Stan out at Pets Corner but could not prevent its closure

A post on the page announcing the closure read: “It comes with great sadness that I have to inform everybody that Pets Corner is closing down.

“It has been an extremely hard decision to make as Pets Corner means so much to everybody, however due to ill health it has become necessary.

“The animals are being re homed with the majority being homed at Nathan’s Farm in Chalfont St Peter which is open to the public so people will still be able to visit them.”
