FANS PAY TRIBUTE TO CYRILLE AT EMPHATIC WIN

FANS PAY TRIBUTE TO CYRILLE BY DEDICATING VICTORY

-

HAYES & Yeading United kept up their Southern League East promotion push with an emphatic 9-1 win over Arlesey Town.

But United chairman Tony O’Driscoll was keen to keep his feet on the ground after the club record win.

“I’d like to think we’ll finish in the top six and so we’ll be in the play-offs at least, so no more than that at the moment,” said O’Driscoll. “Where we’ve had one or two players playing well in different games, I thought a lot more of them played well [against Arlesey] and it was good. Especially the two forwards, who got three goals each.”

Paul Hughes’s side smashed their way into the record books on a cold, wet January afternoon.

The first real effort opened the floodgates as Ola Olajubu cracked a low drive from 25 yards into the bottom corner beyond Lewis Elsom’s dive.

The hosts caused problems for the United defence early on and equalised when Tony Williams coolly slotted home past the diving Renell McKenzie-Lyle on 21 minutes.

Equalising proved to be the worst thing the hosts could have done as they merely tweaked the tiger’s tail, with United finding the net three times in the next five minutes.

First was Ryan Kinnane, head- ing home from a Toby Little corner to restore United’s lead.

Next up was top-scorer Manny Duku, who rose to meet a Laste Dombaxe centre, his header crashing home off the underside of the bar.

Within a minute United had another as Ismael Ehui broke and his shot ricocheted in.

Number five came in first-half stoppage time as Duku was controversially awarded a penalty and stepped up to dispatch it.

And United were awarded a second controversial spot-kick just after the restart, Duku duly completing his hat-trick.

United continued in dominant fashion and Duku’s slide-rule pass sent Ehui away to slide the ball past the onrushing Elsom for his second.

And just over ten minutes later Ehui sealed his own hat-trick.

Things got even worse for the hosts in the 79th minute, when a tackle from behind by Dammy Nickels-Benson resulted in a straight red card.

Little had the final say in to stoppage time, the wing-back firing home for United’s ninth of the game with the fans declaring nine for former star Cyrille Regis – who died last week – at the close.

Hayes were last night due to visit Hanwell Town and will host AFC Dunstable at the Skyex on Saturday (ko 3pm).
