Stones’ play-off hopes lie in tatters after Wilkinson’s men gift Poole an equaliser

-

WEALDSTONE FC were unable to hold on to their lead as they lost 2-1 at Poole Town.

Ryan Sellers gave the Stones a 13th-minute lead from a low ball across the area which crept under Dolphins goalkeeper Nick Hutchings.

Jake Sheppard could have doubled the Stones’ lead early in the second half but a poor touch cost him sight of goal and his place on the pitch as he hobbled off injured as the result of a clash with Hutchings.

The Stones looked in control for an hour until Sellers brought down Jordan Alawode-Williams in the area and Steve Devlin dispatched the penalty to swing momentum in the hosts’ favour.

Warren Bentley then gave Poole the lead five minutes later.

The Stones did mount a response as Dan Fitchett went agonisingly close twice and Bradley Bubb and Eddie Oshodi saw efforts saved by Hutchings but the hosts hung on to shatter Wealdstone’s slim play-off hopes.

Stones manager Bobby Wilkinson said: “I’ve been saying week in, week out, we have to manage the game a lot better and we had for 70 minutes, but it’s typical for us to give them a goal.”
