Getting a handle on Thunder

-

HERE at the branch, we currently have a dozen hamsters looking for new loving homes. Originally, these hamsters were abandoned, unwanted or their owners were simply unable to care for them any longer. Now in the care of the branch, all of our hamsters are in foster homes receiving daily love, care and handling until they go to new homes.

Thunder is a one-year-old winter white hamster. She is one of several hamster signed over as their owner was no longer able to cope with their day-to-day care or afford to feed them .

Thunder is used to frequent handling and so isn’t too bad being picked up and held, though new owners will need to continue to handle her regularly so she gets used to you.

Love bug is an adult male winter white. One of three hamsters found abandoned in a shoebox at the entrance to a park in North West London.

Spot is one of four hamsters transferred into our care from the RSPCA on the Isle of Wight. She is now about 16 months old and in desperate need of a forever loving home.

Please be aware many hamster cages will not be suitable as these particular hamsters are so small they can slip through the bars on many hamster cages. They also find it difficult to climb vertically so large flat cages are better than tall ones.

These hamster will need to live as single hamsters, with plenty of handling from there new owners, these hamsters are extremely fast and lively which can make them difficult to handle, therefore making them an unsuitable pet for young children.

Owning and caring for hamsters can be very rewarding. Typically, hamsters will live for about two to three years depending on their breed. Although this may appear a short time in comparison to other pet animals, owning a hamster is still a big responsibility and commitment. If you would be interested in giving a new home to one of our hamsters, we would love to hear from you!

Whilst hamsters may be small, they will cover a lot of ground each day when dashing around and playing – that means you must have a suitable sized cage for them to run off all that energy.

As such, we require a cage size suitable to the breed of hamster you are looking to adopt, this should give enough space to provide suitable enrichment such as tubes, tunnels, bridges and wheels whilst still allowing generous space for the hamster.

If you think you could offer a forever home any of our small animals, cats and rabbits, please call us on (020) 8966 9688 or email us at: info@rspcamiddlesex.org.uk.
