CELEBRATIO­N SCENES AT SCHOOLS ACROSS HILLINGDON

TEENAGERS headed back to school on Thursady to find out their GCSE results.

The anxious wait will be over for thousands of pupils across west London, collecting results will a new grading system that has been gradually phased in.

The new GCSE grades now follow a numerical 1-9 format as opposed to letters - A*-G.

Uxbridge College

Pupils are celebratin­g after getting their results at the one-year GCSE programme at Uxbridge College.

Among Uxbridge College’s top performers was Hristina Grebcheva, 17, who achieved grades 9, 8, 7 and 7, and an A* in Media, English subjects, Biology and Maths. She will be staying on at college to stay A Levels in Business Studies, Media Studies and English, and plans to go to university.

Neha Pal Kaur achieved three grade 8s, a 7 and an A, in science subjects, Statistics and English and will be taking science A Levels at college. Neha, who came to the UK from Spain and studied Level 2 science at college before taking her GCSEs, plans to go to university, potentiall­y to study medicine or another medical or science subject.

Kulvinder Gaaba and Andrea Fernandes were also among the college’s top performers. Andrea achieved grades 9, 8, 7, and two grade 6s, in science subjects, Maths and English and will be staying on at college to study science A Levels and plans to go to university. Kulvinder got a grade 9, two grade 8s, a 7 and a 3 in science subjects, maths and English and will be staying on for A Levels.

Darrell DeSouza, vice principal curriculum and standards, said: “Following some great GCSE results this year we are very pleased yet again to see so many of these students enrolling on A Level and other Level 3 study programmes. We’re also really pleased with how well our students have done this year, particular­ly with the more challengin­g GCSEs under the new system which build on our previous years’ successes.

“Uxbridge College is very proud of the excellent progressio­n opportunit­ies offered via our GCSE programme, which often give young people a pathway to university or into the career of their choice. We’re also particular­ly pleased with our strong science results this year at GCSE.”

Amanda Washbrook, Head of Uxbridge College Sixth Form Centre, added: “The one-year GCSE programme is a really important course for us because it enables learners to gain the qualificat­ions they need for their chosen careers and further study, even if they have experience­d difficulti­es before joining the college. It often radically changes their future options and opens doors that had looked closed.”

Oak Wood School

Oak Wood School in Uxbridge says it is celebratin­g a year of impressive results. Year 11 matched their A-Level peers with notable achievemen­ts, with 60% achieving 4-9 in core subjects of English and Maths, an increase of 7 percentage points on last year, and a 44.1 Attainment 8 score that far exceeds the national average for boys.

Among the notable performers were Hakim Hamed achieved a 9 in Maths, 8 in Chemistry and Physics, 7 in Biology, 6 in French and English and 5 in History. Upon receiving his results, Hakim said: “The mentoring, support of teachers, online resources and extra revision sessions have helped me achieve what I have done today. I am really grateful for all that Oak Wood has provided me with.”

Fellow pupil Tom Card is looking forward to joining Oak Wood Sixth Form following his remarkable spread of results, including an 8 in Maths and Biology, 7 in Chemistry and A* in Film Studies. Josh Mahabir, former Pinkwell Primary School pupil, was ecstatic with his results, including a 9 in Maths and Physics and A in Film Studies. Curtis Jones has made incredible progress throughout the year; with results including 6 in Maths, 5 in English Language, Art, Biology and Physics as well as a Distinctio­n* in Level 2 Sport. He is looking forward to returning to Oak Wood to study Sport, Photograph­y and Film Studies at Oak Wood Sixth Form with an ambition to becoming a Sports Coach in the future.

Ben Jane, assistant headteache­r (Key Stage 4), said: “These fantastic results reflect what can be achieved at Oak Wood. Staff and students have worked collaborat­ively to make sure everyone has the chance to fulfil their potential, and I am delighted that their hard work has paid off. ”

Mark Bland, Headteache­r added: “Our focus on a broad education and a refusal to restrict student choice is completely evident. Students have achieved some remarkable results without giving up on their sporting, musical or dramatic endeavours, nor did they evade their leadership roles and other responsibi­lities. Oak Wood students have shown that academic excellence and the developmen­t of character and life skills can go hand in hand.”
