Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

Dedicated animal expert MARION GARNETT, founder of the Ealing Animal Charities Fair continues her column

-

THERE’S a lot to share with you this week, so let’s start with the dog who needs a home. Who can resist the pointy ears that belong to Soya, a German shepherd dog currently residing at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. Soya is a friendly boy who loves cuddles. He enjoys company but needs to be shown how to greet other dogs politely as he can be boisterous. He is smart and likes to learn. If you are interested in homing this beautiful boy, see battersea.org. uk or call 0800 001 4444.

Now take your mind back to last week’s column which focussed on the work of Save The Asian Elephants (STAE).

This not-for-profit association of campaigners and lawyers founded by Duncan McNair in Ealing is proving to be an effective force for change with government and the travel industry as STAE fights to protect these highly endangered elephants from extinction and also fights their brutal exploitation by the tourist industry in, for example, their use in elephant rides. Earlier this month STAE presented 3 million petition signatures to the Prime Minister in support of these animals.

STAE now needs a volunteer digital media recruit working from home to help organise a friendly team of social media volunteers and work on communication tasks. If you are interested, email savetheasianelephants@stae.org.

Still thinking about animals in India, if you hear about the floods in Kerala and your heart breaks for the animals as well as the people, Humane Society International is engaged in animal rescue with flood victims. We can read about their work at hsi.org. HSI- India’s facebook page gives details of drop off points for much-needed supplies such as tarpaulins and powerbanks if you have contacts in India

Finally two events taking place this weekend. On Saturday (10am-5pm), the celebrityjudged dog show, Pup Aid, takes place on Primrose Hill. If you haven’t been to this event, you are missing a treat. With over 60 stalls, it really buzzes and is usually stuffed with celebrities. Pup Aid was founded by television vet Marc Abraham and campaigns against the cruelties involved in puppy farming (And, congratulations to ITV for the recent puppy farming storyline in Emmerdale).

Secondly, on Sunday September 2 (3pm-5pm), a supporter of Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) is hosting an afternoon tea with homemade cakes in aid of CIWF at St Mary’s Church, Denham Village.
