United smash club records while keeping cup dreams alive

-

RAMPANT Hayes & Yeading United marched into the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Cup with a by smashing a magnificent seven on their travels.

They thrashed Brimscombe & Thrupp 7-0 in a win that smashed club records in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

Last season they had beaten Brimscombe 1-0 at the SkyEx in the same competition but this season made the division gap between them tell even greater.

It was to be United’s biggest ever FA Cup win and striker Lee Barney became the first ever United player to hit the net five times in a single game, with Josh Chamberlain and Scott Donnelly completing the scorers, but manager Paul Hughes thought it was a slow start.

“I felt we started the game apprehensively for some reason,” he said. “This has been a common thread this season. It seems as though it takes us 15 to 20 minutes to get comfortable with who we’re playing against before we can confidently impose our own game. We need to be able to suss the opposition out whilst asserting our own strengths as we have a very talented group who are good enough to do that.”

The FA Cup win came in the same week that United progressed in the League’s Velocity Cup with a 1-0 win at Ashford Town (Middx).

On Bank Holiday Monday, United travelled to Bedfont Sports in the Isthmian League South Central and provided another goalfest.

A second hat-trick of the weekend for Barney and goals from Toby Little, Josh Chamberlain and Scott Donnelly (Pen) secured a 2-6 win to remain unbeaten.

On Saturday, United are back in League action with the visit of Tooting & Mitcham United.
