JUST a short distance from where Strictly Come Dancing takes place at Elstree Studios lies another arena where stars strut their stuff and showcase their talents.

As the crow flies, the National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) rehoming centre is close to Elstree studios and as, today, I’ve spent the day at the rehoming centre it makes me think how the two centres have more in common, than is first apparent.

First, stars at both centres are concerned with nifty footwork. Just like Strictly’s celebrities, Bobby, the canine star from NAWT, is fast on his feet.

He’s a playful nine-month old beagle cross who, like the stars of Strictly, needs training to make sure his feet are in the right place at the right time. If you think you could handle this, see Bobby’s details on nawt.org.uk.

Of course, backing the stars at Strictly are the fabulous singers and orchestra. And, it’s no surprise that behind the animal stars at the rehoming centre is a full orchestra of staff and volunteers. And here, is where you could come in, the centre has just opened a fantastic café (open every day 11am-3pm), not only could you go and have lunch there but, if you have a free slot in your week, they are short of volunteers.

In Strictly this week, the focus has been on their big event in Blackpool. Not to be outdone, NAWT also have important events on the horizon.

Their next main event is the Christmas Bazaar and Fun Dog Show on Sunday December 2 (11am-3pm). There will be lots of stalls and Santa will be visiting.

And then there is the so-called “Strictly curse” where the Strictly celebrity and professional dancer like each other a bit too much. This is probably where the two arenas differ because, of course, it is hoped that all the stars at the rehoming centre whether they be dog, cat, rabbit or guinea pig, will eventually be partnered with someone who will love them forever – a sentiment echoed by the music played for the first dance in week 8.

Kate and Aljaž danced to the words “I want you to want me, I need you to need me, I’d love you to love me”.

If you want to meet the stars at the NAWT rehoming centre and fall in love, they’re waiting at Tylers Way, Watford-by-Pass, WD25 8WT.
