HAYES & YEADING BRUSH HERTFORD ASIDE

HAYES & YEADING MOVE 12 POINTS CLEAR AFTER THUMPING WIN

-

WITH the rest of the top five in the Isthmian League South Central Division not in action due to the snow that swept through the south east, rampant Hayes & Yeading took full advantage.

The hard work of United groundstaff Derrick Matthews and Kevin Taylor was well rewarded as the side secured their 11th home league win of the season in style on the 3G surface.

A hat-trick from Duncan Culley, two from Lee Barney and one apiece for Toby Little, Josh Chamberlain and Scott Donnelly (pen) notched a record home scoreline of 8-1 as Hertford Town were brushed aside.

The crushing result means Hayes went 12 points clear at the top of the table.

It was not all great news, however, as hard-to-please boss Paul Hughes reflected: “It was an incredible result given the stubborn and competitive nature of Hertford Town. It’s always a difficult game against them but we totally swept them aside and that’s credit to this group of players and their work ethic.

“Anyone who comes to watch us play always walks away commenting on how hard our players work for the entire 90 minutes. This really is the number one ingredient to our success this season.

“This was a perfect example of that. To go down to 10 men and lose your captain after 70 minutes and to out-score the opposition 3-1 in that period is stark proof of the workethic these boys have. It was really impressive and we are delighted with the result.

“The only downside is that we picked up a couple of injuries to key players, which we’ll need to assess in terms of how long the lay-off will be and if we need to bring anyone else in to compensate.

“We’re now 12 points clear at the top of the table with 15 games to play.

“It’s a strong position and the form we are in will mean we will be very difficult to dislodge from that spot. If the boys carry on working as hard as they have been then I’ve no doubt we will keep this form and continue to give everyone we play a very tough time.”

United had claimed three points earlier on in the week with a 5-1 away win at Chalfont St Peter with two goals from Donnelly (one pen), and one each for Barney, Scott Bridges and Ash Nzala.

On Saturday, United attempt to retain their 100 per cent winning record in the league this season at home against fellow promotion chasers Cheshunt.

On Tuesday February 12 they are in action at Hampton & Richmond Borough in the Middlesex Charity Cup semi-final.
