School celebrates 150th birthday with families

-

STAFF, pupils and their families came together for the celebration of 150 years of St Andrew’s Primary School, in Uxbridge, last week.

Celebrations started with the invitation to parents and carers to come into school and to look at all the children’s classwork.

This was followed by a sunny picnic on the school field, where they were also joined by Hillingdon’s deputy mayor, Councillor Teji Barnes, who cut the special birthday cake made by Sally Clargo, chair of The Friends Committee.

The children had a lovely afternoon before being presented with a commemorative pin badge celebrating the occasion, donated by The Friends Committee. Following the picnic was the grand unveiling of the school’s new mosaic.

This was an idea which came about through Dawn Bellis (chair of the parents’ council) and the committee supported by head teacher Nicola Edwards, the governors and The Friends of St Andrew’s. SADIQ Khan has given the go-ahead to a scheme proposed by Morrisons to demolish its Yiewsley store and replace it with a new store with flats above.

The controversial scheme, which will see further redevelopment in the Yiewsley and West Drayton area, was given approval by the Mayor of London.

The supermarket giant applied to Hillingdon Council for its demolition in July 2018.

As well as the store, Morrisons applied to build 144 homes in the building, which would vary from four to eight storeys in height.

Of the 144 homes, 42 would be classed as “affordable”. The application specifies that 32% of these will be under London Affordable Rent and 68% under intermediate affordable housing.

The development is poised, just 150 metres from West Drayton station, to take advantage of Elizabeth line services when

Assisted by Janet Craig, from Hands-on Art Adventures, each child within the school, plus the staff, got the chance to create an amazing masterpiece, the idea of which stems from the schools ethos of ‘Growing and Learning with God’ they launch and sits alongside the Grand Union Canal.

However, recent development of the High Street in Yiewsley and surrounding areas has attracted criticism for causing traffic problems.

The Morrisons will create 170 underground parking spaces in total for its new and the creation of their own school family tree.

Ms Craig took all the necessary materials into St Andrew’s and worked closely with the pupils using each and everyone’s handprints to create the artwork before glazing, store and flats, with 69 for customers and 101 for residents.

Parking will also be accessible via neighbouring St Sephen’s Road.

Morrisons is promising to make investments to the canal towpath along St Stephen’s Road.

The new development is being managed by Morrisons and developers Citygrove.

The planning application submitted to Hillingdon Council last year may now be approved after it wrote to the Mayor in March saying it was minded to grant permission.

Sadiq Khan rejected the initial plan but after the developers worked with the council and Greater London Authority on their plan, it has been approved.

The development will be part of the Heathrow Opportunity Area, earmarked by Sadiq Khan for 9,000 new homes and 12,000 new jobs. baking in the kiln and returning back to them.

The unveiling of the mosaic was also attended by Father John and his wife Rosemary, Councillor Judith Cooper and school governors Jo Mason and Andrew Wilcox.
