Grass fire tackled as temperatures soared

-

A grass fire in Northolt Park has destroyed a large area of grassland behind a row of terraced houses.

More than 70 firefighters were called in to prevent the fire spreading to the homes in Haydock Avenue, while also working to bring the blaze in the field under control.

London Fire Brigade said it received more than 40 emergency 999 calls about the fire which could be seen miles away on Thursday afternoon, July 25.

Northolt residents were even warned to keep their doors and windows closed despite the extreme heat.

Station Manager James Ryan, who was at the scene said: “We believe the fire started in trees behind a row of terrace house and spread to open grassland. Firefighters are working hard to stop the fire from spreading to nearby houses.

“We’d ask local residents to keep their doors and windows closed.”

Firefighters were called to the scene in the Northolt Park Estate in Ealing at 3.52pm and remained at the scene for hours.

Pictures show large black burnt areas of grassland as well as trees and the fire continuing to rage.

Another photo shared by LFB shows the smoke being seen from several miles away over Northolt.

Nearby Heathrow experienced highs of 36.5 C just hours earlier , making it the hottest July day since records began.

The burnt area is not far from a one-hectare area in Hayes destroyed in a fire on Tuesday (July 23) . A neighbour told MyLondon he had seen four teenagers playing in the rubbish just before the fire took hold.
