Three points but ‘a bad day at the office’

UNITED BOSS HITS OUT AT PERFORMANCE DESPITE VICTORY

-

A DEPLETED side secured another important three points for Paul Hughes’ Hayes & Yeading United as they beat visitors Yate 3-1 in the Southern Premier League South.

However, while the United manager was pleased with the outcome he was not happy with the route to attaining it.

“It was a very good result for us but the performance was not up to the level of recent weeks,” he said.

“We allowed far too many crosses into our box and invited pressure onto ourselves throughout the game by making poor decisions when in possession.

“Quality players make good decisions consistently.

“That’s why they are classed as quality players. We feel we have quality players at the club because they’ve shown us they can make good decisions, but that performance was way below the markers they have set. Sometimes you have bad days at the office. I’m classing this as one of them.

“What I will say is that earlier performances this season where we have deserved three points and not had the rub of the green can compensate for the fortune we had.

“Although we restricted them to only two shots on target all game, they put a lot of pressure on us. Our centre-backs were excellent and that’s been a consistent theme for us this season. We’ve not been easy to breach back there.

“What we did do well was create better goalscoring chances than the opposition and that’s always pleasing.

“If we took some of our earlier chances then maybe it would’ve been a much more comfortable win.

“We now need to consistently start converting the more simpler chances we create and then we’ll be a very hard team to beat.”

The United line-up on Saturday featured Leo Donnellan in midfield, who netted the opener on his return to the club from Hitchin Town, as well as another new loan signing in the shape of left-back Callum Buckley, who is in initially for a month from Weymouth.

On Saturday, United are back in FA Cup action with a trip to Combined Counties Premier Division side Badshot Lea in the Second Qualifying Round.

United have been drawn at home to Met Police in the Southern League Challenge Cup. The game will take place on Tuesday October 1.
