Relentless Stones roll on
LEAGUE LEADERS TOO STRONG FOR ANGELS
WEALDSTONE went seven points clear at the top of the National League South after a hard-fought 3-1 win against Tonbridge Angels at Grosvenor Vale on Saturday.
A first half own-goal from Christ Tiehi, accompanied by second half goals from Billy Clifford and Dejon Noel-Williams, cancelled out D’Sean Theobalds’ penalty for the Angels.
Stones soon found their rhythm and Dennon Lewis had the first strike on goal after 15 minutes with a powerful left-foot shot which was saved by Jonathan Henly.
The Stones then went ahead a minute later. A great run by left-back Michee Efete ended with a dangerous low-cross which cannoned off Tiehi and into the back of the net.
A great opportunity fell to the hosts six minutes after half-time after Lewis’ quick feet in the penalty area resulted in a foul. Clifford, who was handed the opportunity to convert from 12-yards, saw his penalty parried by Henly straight back into his path, and he gladly lofted the ball high into the net with the outside of his boot.
Tonbridge got back into the game with a penalty of their own though, Jerome Okimo making a clumsy foul, and Theobalds’ penalty was driven low under Aston Oxborough with 29 minutes remaining.
The Angels hunted for an equaliser in the final quarter, the highlight of their pressure being Tom Derry’s free header from six-yards out which was saved by Oxborough.
And the home fans’ nerves evaporated in stoppage time when another dangerous run from Lewis ended with Noel-Williams drilling the ball across goal into the bottom corner for Stones’ third.
