THINK that your balustrades are in need of a bolster? Could your spindles do with spicing up? Perhaps it’s time your flooring got re-formatted.

Quite often, the stairs are the first thing you see when entering a home, and first impressions count.

So if yours are a little past their best, now is the perfect time to climb a few rungs in the décor stakes and take your stairs to the next level.

Don’t worry if you don’t know where to start, my guide to giving your staircase a new look will give you plenty of inspiration if you want to change your stair aesthetics.

But a few words of advice: if you are considering a more structural makeover, always consult an expert before making any changes.

There are rules and regulations aplenty when it comes to domestic staircases so don’t be tempted to cut corners.

FLOOR COUTURE

ONE of the most impactful changes you can make to your staircase is the flooring.

From the soft tread and simplicity of a luxuriously thick carpet to the beautiful finish of an intricate paint job, fresh flooring will bring a new look – and sometimes feel – to the staircase. What option you go for will depend not only on budget, but the condition of the steps. If your stairs are structurally sound but need a lot of cosmetic work, carpet is perfect for disguising unsightly steps.

It can also help soundproof if you have a noisy step. What’s more, if you use the same carpet throughout your hall, stairs and landing, it will give your home a more unified look.

If you fancy a boost in the style stakes however, a classic stair runner will add instant drama.

Again, it depends on the condition of the steps as a carpet runner will only hide a portion of the tread.

However, if your stairs are in good enough condition, sand and stain the tread to complement the runner.

Alternatively, paint them a dark, impactful colour to ensure the runner truly stands out.

For another dramatic makeover, consider using a combination of paint and vinyl to create a stunning effect. Go for paint on the tread and use a patterned vinyl on the uprisers.

Again, this will hide a multitude of sins while adding a focal point and is really easy to apply. Simply peel the back off the vinyl adhesive and, voila, an instant new look.

BALUSTRADE BOOST

BALUSTRADES are an absolute must in family homes; so even if you’re tempted to get rid – don’t.

However, if yours are a little lacklustre, there are plenty of ways of injecting style into this most essential of homewares.

A simple paint job is the easiest way of updating balustrades and, if you’re up for it, go bold. Don’t feel it has to be a neutral shade or white – search Pinterest for inspirational paint jobs. Some will be beyond repair, and if yours are in this category (and budget allows) bring in an expert to fit new spindles.

The options are endless. From the traditional decorative spindle to contemporary sleek equivalents – there is something to suit every décor. Finish with a new complementing handrail and newel posts to complete the look.

If you really want a bold injection of style, consider a bespoke glass balustrade. It might come with a pretty hefty price tag but not only will give your stair space a completely new look, it will also give the illusion of additional space.

SURROUNDING SPACE

DON’T forget there is plenty you can do to the surrounding areas to inject some new vibes into your staircase.

Creating a gallery-style picture wall or simply painting your wall a bold colour will instantly lift the space.

You could also add new features, such as a dado rail or a statement light fixture, to draw the eye.
