MANAGER OF HILLINGDON HOTEL FINED OVER FLYTIPPED FURNITURE AND MATTRESSES
THE manager of a Hillingdon hotel has been fined in court after old furniture and mattresses were found dumped in nearby Iver Heath.
The Hillingdon Lodge Hotel was going through refurbishment at the time and the manager made a deal to get rid of the waste with a man he had met in a café.
The man offered to take the items away for a cash payment, but instead of taking it to a commercial waste facility or recycling it, the furniture and mattresses was dumped in the Buckinghamshire countryside just a few miles away.
The huge pile of old items from the hotel in Hercies Road, near Hillingdon Tube station, was found in Seven Hills Road on August 8 2018.
Investigators later learned that there was so much waste the items had to be collected in two loads.
Buckinghamshire County Council’s enforcement officers used evidence to trace the waste back to Hillingdon Lodge Hotel.
Sayem Salam, the 34-year-old manager of the hotel, admitted in an interview he had not checked the identity of the man he met in the café or made any enquiries into where the waste would be taken.
Salam, of Richmond Avenue, in Hillingdon, was fined £700 for each load and ordered to pay £3,230 in costs and a victim surcharge of £140.
The total fine imposed by High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on October 16 was £4,770, which will have to be paid at the rate of £400 per month.
A spokesman for the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire said: “Everyone has a responsibility – both in a private and work capacity – to make sure that their waste is disposed of properly, by a reputable waste carrier.
“This duty of care exists precisely because criminal waste carriers are responsible for a large proportion of fly tipping - as happened in this case.”
