BRING SOME PETAL POWER INTO THE HOME THIS SPRING, SAYS LESLEY TAYLOR

Bring the garden into your home for a bright spring look

FLORALS rarely go out of fashion. And if you excuse the pun, they are something of an evergreen when it comes to interiors too.

From wallpaper to crockery, curtains to paintings, flowers work with any interiors style, from chintzy to minimalism.

And with spring (allegedly) just around the corner, now is the perfect time to inject some flower power into your home.

FLORAL ACCENTS

If you’re a fan of more minimalist home trends, the idea of incorporating florals into your home may be daunting.

However, a perfectly placed petal or two can have a huge impact without overwhelming the space.

One of the easiest ways to bring this trend into the home is an antique piece of art. Using artwork in minimalist interiors adds a focal point without cluttering up floor space.

The key is to find a picture with similar colours to the ones predominately used in the home. Scour antique shops and salvage yards until you find the perfect piece. A battered frame will add character.

If art isn’t your thing, a simple bunch of fresh blooms once a week will soften minimalist edges while bringing in some biophilic feels.

FOODY FLORALS

The kitchen is a great place to play around with florals.

Fresh flowers will look amazing in kitchen windows and will complement any herb gardens or window boxes.

Right now, the interiors market is awash with floral inspired tableware that encompasses everything from delicate dainty patterns to punchier designs.

If you do decide to invest in a new dinner service, make it work all the time – not just when food is served.

Consider some open shelving in your kitchen, where you could display your new plates, bowls and cups. For added bonus points, place a vase of fresh flowers next to them to really cement the look.

On dining tables, don’t just let your plates do the talking. Get creative with homegrown flowers found in your garden and craft your own centrepiece.

The great thing about creating your own centrepiece from flowers foraged from your own garden is it will change with the seasons, giving you a beautifully on-trend focal point that is perfectly sustainable.

FULL BLOOM

If you are well into the floral look, forget delicate and go full bloom.

From statement wallpaper to attention-grabbing curtains, if you want to go big there are plenty of options out there.

I am a huge fan of clashing patterns, so I love seeing wallpaper and curtains with real contrast paired together. If you are feeling super bold, you may even wish to consider re-upholstering your sofa in a stunning floral fabric or perhaps incorporate a floral mural that runs the full length of your wall.

If you’re worried about tying the look together, find fabrics and wallpaper that have a common colour throughout – perhaps a similar shade of green or a pop of pink. If you’re styling a bedroom or a living area, scatter cushions in the same shade will add emphasis.
