Meet the man dressed in a greenhouse

-

ANYONE passing through Uxbridge in recent weeks may have noticed a man dressed in a greenhouse. Yes, you read that right.

Terry Stubbs has taken the extraordinary measure as a way of not only protecting himself from coronavirus, but also to “put a smile on people’s faces”.

The 67-year-old, who lives in Harefield Road, walked to his girlfriend’s house to wish her happy birthday while dressed in the plastic greenhouse, and also walked a seven mile round-trip to see his grandson on his fifth birthday.

“The first time I did it was for my girlfriend’s birthday,” Mr Stubbs told MyLondon.

“I couldn’t buy a card so I made one and stuck it on the back of the greenhouse.

“I started walking but about a quarter of a mile down the road I nearly blew over so I got in the car and drove most of the way. I then got out the car and put the greenhouse back on and knocked on the door.

“I did the same for my grandson’s fifth birthday a week later but because the weather was better, I walked the whole distance dressed in the greenhouse. “I put Boris Johnson masks around it [the greenhouse] because he was in hospital at the time.”

On Friday, April 10 Mr Stubbs was pictured walking along Harlington Road as he made his way to visit his grandson.

With his ankles and feet the only part of himself on show, the greenhouse covered most of his body.

Several Union Jack flags were stuck on the outside of the greenhouse as decoration.

On his journeys in the greenhouse, Mr Stubbs says it’s common for people to stop and smile at him as they walk past, while others take photos.

He said: “I didn’t realise it would happen but people started smiling [when they saw me] and took photographs.

“I didn’t even think people would notice so it’s nice to put a smile on people’s faces.”

Sometimes, people get a bit too excited when they see Mr Stubbs.

“Drivers sometimes put their phones out the window and try to take pictures,” he said.

“People also stop and stare if they see me walking and when I once walked through the town someone said to me, ‘Are you selling masks?.’”

While he admitted it was all a bit of fun, Mr Stubbs was adamant walking in a greenhouse wouldn’t become a permanent thing.

However, he didn’t rule out wearing the greenhouse again, so keep your eyes peeled when passing through Uxbridge.
