CONSTITUENCY MATTERS

- Virendra Sharma, Labour MP for Ealing Southall

THIS time next week we are all hoping lockdown will be over, that Covid rates will have dropped far enough to allow a bit more freedom at the end of the month and a vaccine may herald hope for next year.

For now, however, I urge everyone to support those around them.

In the absence of official shielding advice from the government, the help of friends and neighbours is even more valuable for the vulnerable.

As the winter draws in, more people are at risk of becoming lonely and isolated.

While following all the guidelines, and staying safe, it would mean so much to those alone at this time of year if you would take time to catch up, on the phone, online or in person.

A Christmas without parties and without friends and family is far more likely for many this year, and just a check in or a drop in could really brighten someone’s day.

The pandemic has brought out the best of our community, from food banks to food deliveries and shielding help, everyone seems to have stepped up.

Schools, religious groups and institutions, social clubs and sports teams have all done their bit.

Let us see the same commitment to society in the recovery.

Since we first started to work from home, I have moved a lot of the work I do online.

I have run regular social care seminars with social care workers and residents, events to speak to young people about what they need, how to help their mental health and the iniquity of the exams fiasco this summer.

We have brought together teachers and teaching assistants to talk about safely opening schools and how children can learn in the current situation and run a live streamed seminar on keeping warm and cutting bills this winter.

I have met with residents in Northfield and Elthorne to discuss the Low Traffic Neighbourhood scheme and run weekly online surgeries for those in Ealing Southall.

As we hope to begin the recovery, following the rules to keep us on the right path becomes even more important.

Stay safe, wash your hands, cover your face and give others space.

Together, with social distancing, our NHS and our community can overcome any challenge.
