BEATLEJUICE: EXTRA SQUEEZE

Eavesdropping on the inner workings of a marriage is always fascinating and no less so with this new podcast from the presenter of the excellent Beatlejuice show on Union Jack Radio.

While his weekly two-hour Beatles showcase is packed with songs, rights issues mean podcasts can rarely feature music. So instead, this companion podcast involves Geoff Lloyd and his hilariously nonchalant wife Sara Barrett chatting about his obsession with the band.

Alongside stories of Geoff buying pointy Beatles shoes for his pre-wedding dinner and discussions of whether the album names are all that great, it includes longer versions of interviews from the radio show.

It’s an entertaining listen whether you’re infected with Beatlemania or more of a casual fan.

LOVE AND WARDS

Sound designer David Devereux grew up listening to his parents’ stories about working for the NHS in their 20s but never really asked them many questions.

So he sat them down and recorded what he has turned into an eight-part podcast that covers everything from unexpectedly travelling by air ambulance to how a sense of humour helps deal with death.

Personal stories include his mum’s nervous laughter when encountering her first dead body as a student nurse and the mistaken identity of a patient who’d absconded in a flat cap and pyjamas.

It’s not always an easy listen but it is a fascinating one.

WHERETO FIND IT: All podcast apps but if you can’t wait for the whole series to be released you can purchase an eight-episode pass at bit.ly/loveandwards

WHERE TO START: Helicopters & Ambulances includes David’s dad’s memory of being talked through draining fluid from around a man’s heart and saving his life by a surgeon on the end of the phone.
