ARE THEY STILL WELSH?

- with Gwynfor Rhyddick-Llidl Emeritus Professor of Celebrity Welshness at Cambridge University

BACK in the Eighties and Nineties, I used to love following the wacky antics of former Labour leader Neil Kinnock. I particularly liked it when he fell over on Brighton Beach that time and got a wet arse, and then sort of angrily punched the air as he staggered off. However, I haven’t seen him on telly for a few years, and I was just wondering: is he still Welsh? Edna Bum-Raisins, Nuneaton *Many thanks for your letter, Mrs Bum-Raisins. You are absolutely correct in pointing out that Neil Kinnock is not quite the mainstream media fixture he used to be in previous decades. However, despite his recent absence from our small screens and newspapers, I can confirm that Mr Kinnock continues to be Welsh, both in public and in the privacy of his own home. WHEN I was a child, I absolutely adored the atmospheric pop hit Walking In The Air by teenage choral sensation Aled Jones. I am aware that Jones was Welsh when this song was recorded, but that was all the way back in 1985, and I was thinking the other day: he can’t still be Welsh, can he? Esteban Arse-Grapes, Watford *I hope you’re sitting down, Mr Arse-Grapes, because you’re in for a shock. The Welsh singer and presenter Aled Jones remains Welsh to this day, and, according to sources close to him, he has no plans whatsoever to not be Welsh in the near future. FOR reasons I won’t go into here, I don’t like the Welsh and I never have. Consequently, you can imagine my anger and despair when I switched on BBC News a few years back to find it presented by a Welsh anchorman named Huw Edwards. I was so disgusted I haven’t watched it since. However, it occurred to me recently that Mr Edwards may have stopped being Welsh nowadays, which would mean I could safely tune back into his programme. Can you please let me know if this is the case? Maureen Buttocks, Chipping Norton *I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Mrs Buttocks, but at time of press the journalist, presenter and newsreader Huw Edwards is still openly Welsh. My advice would be to try watching Channel 4 News from now on, as its host, Jon Snow, is not Welsh and has yet to display any interest in becoming Welsh.
