Help me get love back on track
Dear Miriam,
I RECENTLY met a guy on an online dating site. We both had lots in common, especially a love of legally disposing of large volumes of household and commercial waste. For our first “date” he suggested picking me up in his truck at 3:00 in the morning and driving to a remote country lane. After a quick collection from a lock-up, we eventually arrived at a lovely beauty spot down a narrow trackway in the secluded countryside and parked up next to a farmer’s field. He jumped out the front and went to the back where he unloaded two old fridges, a dishwasher, three rolls of battered lino and several old tyres, and then dumped them at the side of the road.
On his profile he had bragged about his environmental permit for the disposal of controlled waste which I found very attractive, but it turned out that he was just another fly-tipper. I felt cheated, and I told him so. He has since apologised and has offered me a second date to drop some plasterboard off at a registered council recycling facility. I like him and want to give him a second chance, but I am a little suspicious, as he says he wants to stop near an unmonitored section of the Wakefield canal first. Should I go on another date?

Miriam says: If he was really serious about starting a relationship with you he would have chosen a legitimate disposal route for his waste. Before agreeing to a second date, ask him to scan and email over a copy of his management licence. You could also tell him to meet you at the waste disposal facility to remove any temptation to stop by the canal. If he refuses, I think it is best that you call it a day and find someone more more on your waste management wavelength.
