Rhod Gilbert set to hit new heights for charity

-

HE’S climbed Kilimanjaro, and trekked to Craig Goch – now Rhod Gilbert is heading to Machu Picchu.

The Welsh funnyman is taking part in his latest fundraiser for Velindre Cancer Centre. He is a patron of the charity. Previous challenges have been to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and trek to Craig Goch as part of the Patagonia 150th year celebrations.

Rhod has now announced his next challenge will be in the Andes to the fabled “lost” Inca city of Machu Picchu.

The trip will be from September 13 to 23, 2017.

He said: “Our last trek was in Patagonia, and it was a tough challenge, but ultimately it was very rewarding – as a group we raised over half a million pounds.

“There were over 60 of us, including Shane Williams, two Manic Street Preachers and Derek the Weather. The camaraderie was exceptional, and helped carry everyone (sometimes literally) through some difficult days trekking through jungle, snow and rivers.

“This new trek looks equally tricky, especially as some of it will be at altitude, and I know from struggling to the top of Kilimanjaro how tough that makes things.”

Andrew Morris from Velindre said: “We are delighted that Rhod is leading his third trek for us, and this Peru trek is exceptional; the Peruvian Andes are spectacular and our specially designed route takes us on a rarely used Inca highway through some of the most stunning scenery anywhere.”
