PROBE GOES ON INTO CITY FIRES

- HELEDD PRITCHARD Reporter heledd.pritchard@walesonline.co.uk

P OLICE inquiries are continuing two months on after Cardiff was hit by two huge fires in the same evening.

April 7 saw crews called out to a blaze at a furniture discount warehouse in City Road, Roath, just after 6pm, with more than 50 firefighters reported at the scene.

And later on into the evening, just after 10pm, crews were called out to a second large blaze at the disused Glyn Derw High School in Ely.

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: “The school building was so unsafe we could not enter to do a full investigation. The property was partially derelict and already had a demolition order on it.

“There was no gas or electricity link-up at the time.”

He added: “The probability is that the fire was started deliberately but cannot be ascertained as a definite cause.”

Fire services confirmed the cause of the fire at the furniture discount warehouse on City Road is “undetermined”.

But a spokeswoman for South Wales Police said there have been no arrests following the incidents and said their inquiries into both fires were continuing.

Glyn Derw High School had not been in use since last year and a new £30m secondary school is due to be built on the site, scheduled to open in September 2018.

The school is being demolished, clearing the site ready for the new building which will replace the Glyn Derw High School and Michaelston Community College federated schools, which are currently located on the Michaelston site.

Work is scheduled to start early next year and the new school will be a pathfinder school for the Creative Education Partnership.
