THRONES STAR SEND-OFF FOR 30-MILE WALK

- JAMES MCCARTHY Reporter james.mccarthy@walesonline.co.uk

G AME of Thrones star Owen Teale launched the third annual Big Walk for charity Prostate Cymru in Cardiff yesterday. The star was unable to take part in the event, which sees participants walk almost 30 miles from the Principality Stadium to Kenfig Hill RFC, because he had to go to London.

But he told almost 300 people taking part he wished he was.

“I have been talking to people, and seeing old friends has been amazing. A lot of memories have been coming back,” the 55-yearold told fundraisers at the start line at the stadium.

“You think, ‘How did I get from there to here?’”

The actor – who plays baddie Ser Alliser Thorne in the HBO series – grew up in Cornelly, Bridgend.

“My brothers no longer live in Kenfig Hill, and I’m in danger of losing touch, so when I was invited to do this by David Brace, who is organising this and bringing it all together, I thought, ‘What a chance.’”

Owen went to school with former Wales international and Prostate Cymru fundraiser Ray Giles.

“He became famous quickly because he could play rugby, but for this to be the cause to bring me back is very fulfilling,” Owen said.

“It’s nothing to get on a train to be here. To walk 30 miles to Kenfig Hill is something.”

Organisers say it’s the longest and most challenging group charity walk in Wales.

Previously walkers have been seen off by rugby celebs Warren Gatland, Lloyd Ashley, Gethin Jenkins and Rhys Priestland.

Owen insisted it was “huge” what the walkers were doing.

“I wish I could come with you now,” he said.

Former scrum-half Ray Giles said it was “great” to see Owen.

“I went down the sporting route and Owen went into acting,” he said.

“I’m lucky because I keep in touch with his brother on Facebook, we chat now and again about him.

“To get him here today is great. I wish we had more time with him.”

Since being founded in 2014, The Big Walk has raised £33,000 for Prostate Cymru.

Registering is £20 and walkers must raise at least £20.

The charity’s Tina Tew said they were hoping to raise as much as £30,000.

“The big thing with this walk is that it is not a race,” she said.

“It’s about community spirit and walking together and everyone getting together.

“We’ll be meeting up in Kenfig Hill so everyone can do the last bit together.

“Then we’ll have a party at the rugby club. Some will have a foot massage and others will carry on and dance.”
