Helicopter and armed police in man hunt

-

ARMED police were called in after receiving reports of a man walking around with a knife.

Police played down the incident, in Treorchy, Rhondda, yesterday, saying the man was not believed to be a danger to the public.

One witness, who did not want to be named, saw a helicopter circling above their home.

“There are people asking what is happening but no-one seems to know,” the witness said.

“You see the police helicopter now and again but I’ve never seen armed police before. They have got helmets and flak jackets and guns, obviously.

“There is something going on that is not very good for Treorchy.

“It’s quite scary, really, because there have been no sirens or anything.

“I wouldn’t say it is covert but it’s quite a quiet operation.”

South Wales Police confirmed the incident in Treorchy’s Luton Street.

“We do have an incident ongoing at the moment in relation to a wanted person,” Inspector Steve Grother said.

“At about 10.20 this morning we had a report of a male in possession of a knife, so there are a number of officers looking for a male at the moment.

“I must stress that there is no indication there is any danger to the public.

“This was believed to be not quite a domestic incident but an incident between friends.”
