Joy for Joyce in Sevens opener

-

PEMBROKESHIRE sprint sensation Jasmine Joyce has created history by becoming the first Welsh rugby star to score an Olympics try in Rio.

Rugby Sevens has been introduced into the Olympics for the Games in Brazil and Joyce was part of the women’s Team GB squad who opened their campaign against hosts Brazil.

After coming on as a replacement Joyce, 20, sprinted away to score a try by showing an excellent turn of pace that was praised by World Cup winning coach Sir Clive Woodward who was commentating for the BBC.

Joyce is the only Welsh member of the 12-strong Team GB squad as she is joined by 11 English women, although former Glantaf Comprehensive pupil Megan Jones is one of the travelling reserves.

GB had recovered from a shaky start at the Deodoro Stadium as Emily Scarratt’s team led only 7-3 at the break after Brazil, inspired by their talisman Paula Ishibashi, dominated territory and threatened a possible upset.

But Britain settled after half-time and ran out comfortable winners on the back of two Natasha Hunt tries, plus touchdowns from Joanne Watmore, Joyce and Emily Scott, with Katy McLean kicking two conversions.

Boos rang out from a vociferous home crowd each time a British player touched the ball early on, but they responded well and ultimately eased home as rugby sevens made its Olympic debut in temperatures approaching 30 degrees.

GB had faced Japan late last night and will tackle Canada in the final group game at 4.30pm today before a possible quarter-final at 9pm.

The medals will be decided on Monday.
