Five taken to hospital after horror road smash

-

FIVE people were taken to hospital following a two-car smash on the A470 in North Wales which shut the road for more than two hours.

A man and a woman had to be freed by firefighters using cutting equipment after the crash, between Glan Conwy and Tal y Cafn in Conwy at about 1.15pm.

Police, fire and ambulance crews worked at the scene as traffic jams built up around the accident site.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent two crews from Llanrwst and Colwyn Bay, while the Welsh Ambulance Service sent three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and a doctor to tend to the injured.

All five people involved were taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and are said to be in a stable condition.

They were a man in his 80s, a man in his 60s, and a man and two women in their 50s.

The road reopened shortly before 3.45pm.

Traffic was being diverted at the B5279 onto the B5106 to join the A55 and then to rejoin the A470 at Llandudno Junction.

The road is known for being an accident blackspot.

Sentencing two speeding bikers at Caernarfon Crown Court on Friday, Judge Niclas Parry said figures from North Wales Police showed the A470 between Betws y Coed and Glan Conwy had seen “hundreds of collisions in recent years”.

He said there been seven incidents which had resulted in fatalities and 41 serious injuries.
