THESE beautiful images were taken on top of the Brecon Beacons as the mountain range enjoyed its first dusting of snow this winter. Captured by photographer David Short, they depict Wales’ third highest peak, Pen y Fan, at dawn yesterday morning.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for ice yesterday morning, with a cold north-westerly airstream bringing heavy showers of rain and sleet to large parts of South Wales.

Between 1cm and 3cm of snow was also forecast to accumulate on hills above 200m, and it seems that Pen y Fan was among those peaks to enjoy its first glimpse of the white stuff this year.

A dip in temperature overnight saw a flurry of snow dust the tops of the mountain and hills in North Wales also, giving walkers a spectacular view.

Up to two inches of snow fell in the early hours of yesterday across high ground in Snowdonia.

Today is set to be calmer in Wales, but elsewhere the first named storm of the season is set to batter southeast England, as pockets of the North continue to be hit by snow showers.

The Met Office has issued an amber “be prepared” weather warning ahead of Storm Angus, from Bournemouth to Dover, for coastal winds and gusts of up to 80mph.

A Met Office spokesman said: “The rain and strong winds associated with Storm Angus will spread northwards overnight. The rain will be heavy at times, possibly turning wintry over the hills. The rain will turn showery from the south later and we will see minimum temperatures at 0⁰C.

“It’ll be a wet start to Sunday morning, with some showers. However, the showers will gradually ease into the afternoon, with some brighter spells developing, and with winds easing too.”

The outlook for Wales tomorrow is for further wet and windy weather, possibly turning to snow, mainly over the hills.

Sunny spells and showers are expected on Tuesday.

On Wednesday it will be drier and brighter with overnight frosts.
