SURREAL SNAPPER CAPTURES PEOPLE’S REAL PERSONALITIES

- HELEDD PRITCHARD Reporter heledd.pritchard@walesonline.co.uk

THEY say a picture is worth a thousand words – and that is exactly what this “surreal photographer” from Cardiff tries to capture in every shot.

Piotr Skoczylas sits down with each one of his subjects and gets to know them before injecting elements of their lives or personality into each photo.

His art is called surreal photography, based on the idea that imagination is incorporated into real pictures.

The 25-year-old said: “Every single person is different and everyone has their own story. What I do is turn that story into something creative.

“My goal is to tell a story through my images and create a connection between the viewer and the art- work. I want to send a message, not just take nice photos of people.”

For example, a photograph he took of a man with sparks of fire coming out of his chest conveys the subject’s emotional devastation and the idea that what he was going through was burning his heart.

Another image, which has gained thousands of views, shows a man with skyscrapers and flying birds running through his mind.

“The idea behind all the photos is to make people look and find their own interpretation,” Piotr said.

“Most people get it right but some come up with other ideas.”

Surreal photography started for Piotr when he travelled in Europe and realised the people he met, the emotions people carry and the memories we hold can be an inspiration for pieces of art.

He said: “I hope my photographs show not only my skills but also freedom, love, mystery, intensity, drama and all the feelings and emotions which make us who we are.”
