GET READY FOR 12 MORE BLEAK MONTHS

- JAMES MCCARTHY Reporter james.mccarthy@walesonline.co.uk

TILLS in a skip, a burnt -out doorway and a poster of a fly next to a “no flyposting” sign – this is Dean Beddis’ 2017 calendar. The Elvis impersonator has been producing bleak calendars over the past four years and says the images are always of things he finds “intriguing”.

The calendar will raise funds for the Maesglas/Brynglas autism centre, which is part of Maes Ebbw School. One of Dean’s children has the condition.

“I have been taking photos throughout the year, it is the fourth year I have done it,” the 51-year-old, who runs Newport’s Kriminal Records, said.

“Some people love it and some people hate it. Some people can’t wait for it. I’ve had people ask for five because they are giving them away to people.

“Some people say they do not want the calender but will give a donation anyway.”

Bad Sam vocalist Dean added: “The pictures I have always done are of stuff that I find intriguing. Life and death, if you want to put it that way.

“Things like TJ’s door. If a door could talk – the amount of people that have gone through that door. It’s sad to see it that way. But I had some amazing times in there so it’s happy and sad for me.

“Then there is the Newport cherub with the fag in his mouth.

“There are cash registers in a bin for April. I liked that because everyone wants to get rid of cash and use credit cards.”

September has a poster of a fly next to a “No fly posting” sign.

The dad-of-four said he did not set up the snap.

He said: “Someone had taken the time to do that and put it up.”

A picture of Peter Fink’s 14 metre Steel Wave sculpture celebrates June – but beneath an underpass in the foreground is a cardboard box Dean said was a homeless man’s shelter.

February shows a piece of graffiti on a phone box.

Anyone who would like to buy a copy of the calendar, £2, can call him on 07875 386 597.
