CAN ALANA WIN THE APPRENTICE?

- JOSHUA KNAPMAN Reporter joshua.knapman@walesonline.co.uk

IS there a very real risk of finally having a Welsh winner of The Apprentice? Maybe. Because the only Welsh contestant in this year’s Apprentice has made it through to the final five.

After last week’s episode saw Trishna Thakrar fired by Lord Sugar following a disastrous gin-making challenge, Alana Spencer now has a one-in-five chance of winning the show.

The baker from Ceridigion will now go through to week 10 – where she’ll have to present her business plan in the interview stage of the contest.

And while she has shown she’s a likeable person, there’s not much else she’s done.

But that’s not an exclusive feat for Alana, 24, as this year’s candidates in general have shown to be almost completely useless at... well, everything, resulting in a slightly infuriating series of television. What has she done so far? Alana has had her moments. Despite her slightly back-seat approach to the competition, in week one she claimed: “All I’ve ever been interested in is having as much money and as much power as I can.”

Maybe letting others fall first is all part of her long game?

By week three she took charge of her first project, and Alana’s stint as PM paid off. There were tears, of course, but her team ultimately won the task that saw her utilising her skills and experience in the sweet food industry.

She was also one of the saving graces of a losing team during the virtual reality task.

Granted, she wasn’t assertive enough when it came to deciding what sub-team to be put on (which seems to have been a contributing factor to the team’s loss) but she was the only member of the team not to be called back into the boardroom during the double firing that took place that week. So, who else is left? Frances Bishop

She owns a kids’ clothing company and the 25-year-old lives in Doncaster. Frances is a self-described talkative person but also says she has a feisty personality which, according to her, has helped her in the business world. Courtney Wood

The 29-year-old novelty gift company owner lives in Essex. He supplies national and international retailers with novelty gifts which he designs and creates. Jessica Cunningham

Jessica, 29, is an online fashion entrepreneur from Derbyshire.

Along with her fashion company she’s also an operations director for a marketing and PR firm. Grainne McCoy

The 31-year-old make-up business owner lives in Northern Ireland.

She works all over the country on various make-up projects such as film sets and fashion shows.
