PASSENGERS (12A)
MANKIND searches for new planets to inhabit and the Starship Avalon launches, loaded with 258 crew and 5,000 passengers in deep sleep, on a 120-year journey to the colony of Homestead II.
When a meteor shower causes the ship’s computer and hibernation pods to malfunction, mechanical engineer Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) and journalist Aurora Dunn (Jennifer Lawrence, pictured) wake prematurely. They face spending the rest of their lives with the ship’s robot bartender Arthur (Michael Sheen) and romance sparks between the pair, but when crew chief Gus Mancuso (Laurence Fishburne) is also roused a shocking secret is exposed.
Passengers is a missed opportunity that relies heavily on the star wattage of Lawrence and Pratt.
COLLATERAL BEAUTY (12A)
HOWARD INLET (Will Smith, left) is the majority shareholder in an advertising agency, which he runs with his friend, Whit Yardsham (Edward Norton).
The death of Howard’s daughter has reduced him to an emotional wreck and Whit fears the company will implode unless he takes drastic action.
Along with fellow executives Claire Wilson (Kate Winslet) and Simon Scott (Michael Pena) they hire private investigator Sally Price (Ann Dowd) to gather incriminating evidence and she discovers Howard writes angry letters to Death, Time and Love.
Whit, Claire and Simon hire three actors – played by Helen Mirren, Jacob Latimore and Keira Knightley – to portray these abstractions and converse with Howard, then secretly film the conversations as proof of his madness.
Meanwhile, Howard joins a self-help group run by Madeleine (Naomie Harris) in this somewhat clumsy examination of living with grief.
