THE WORLD OF RUGBY OFFERS BEST WISHES TO JOOST

THE rugby world has united to offer best wishes to South Africa legend Joost van der Westhuizen following the news that he is in a critical condition in hospital.

The Springbok icon has been battling motor neurone disease since 2011.

His J9 Foundation confirmed on Facebook yesterday morning that he had been rushed to hospital and is in critical condition.

“The family and friends of Joost ask that you all pray for Joost,” a short statement read.

“He was taken to hospital earlier today and is in a critical condition.

“We ask that you all please respect the families time at the moment.

“When we have updates we will let you know for now we ask that we all bow our heads in prayer (sic).”

Throughout his illustriou­s career, the scrum-half earned 89 caps for South Africa, winning the World Cup in 1995.

He once held the Springbok tryscoring record with 38.

Fans have taken to social media to give their best wishes to the former scrum-half.

Louise Pullen wrote on Facebook: “Such a fantastic player, had the honour of watching him play against us in Cardiff. Thoughts are with him and his family xx.”

Sue Grigson said: “Such a fantastic rugby player. Always a joy to watch. This is so sad.”

Marie Ogden wrote: “Thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friends” while Leighton Jenkins said: “The best scrum half I’ve ever seen.”
