BARRY Town took over at the top of the Nathaniel Car Sales Welsh League when they swept to a 3-1 victory at struggling Caldicot Town yesterday.

They took advantage of the defeat of previous leaders Goytre by rampant Caerau Ely and the fact that Cambrian and Clydach could only draw 3-3 at home to Goytre United.

Barry bidding to return to the Welsh Premier League produced an inspired second-half performanc­e in Gwent after the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 at the break.

Louis Gerrard bagged a brace for Barry.

Goytre were crushed 4-1 by Caerau Ely for whom Curtis Hudson got two and Rameer Outlaw and Chris Quick one apiece while Cambrian and Clydach despite coming back from being 2-0 down to Goytre United to take the lead 3-2 conceded a late own goal to be held to a stalemate. Haverfordw­est kept alive their outside chances of the crown with a 1-0 home success against Monmouth Town courtesy of a late Rhys Dalling strike.

Cwmamman United stepped up their challenge for second division promotion with a hardfought 3-2 triumph at Croesyceil­iog. Ryan Thomas, Aaron Richards and substitute Cory Saunders were on target for the West Walians.

A last-minute Kyle Lewis goal gave Dinas Powis victory over West End and Bruno Forkuoh gave Ammanford the goal which saw them defeat Aberdare Town 1-0. STM Sports are nine points clear at the top of the third division after a 7-1 drubbing of Cwm Welfare.

Meanwhile Sully Sports are through to the semi-finals of the FAW Trophy after a 1-0 win over former West Wales Cup holders Team Swansea – Darren Townsend was the scorer.
