KEITH ALLEN’S RETURN TO TWIN TOWN

- NATHAN BEVAN Reporter nathan.bevan@walesonline.co.uk

EVERYONE remembers the classic scene from Twin Town where the Lewis twins rustle up a hot dog and sprinkle it with magic mushrooms – only for it to get inadvertently quaffed by a farmer seconds later.

“Plenty of follow through on this, boys – very, very unusual,” he says, before being spotted shortly afterwards, completely out of it and cavorting naked with a sheep.

It was one of the film’s biggest laugh-out-loud moments and the actor that played the role – Keith Allen – has revealed he’s set to return in the long-awaited sequel, which is due to start filming around Llanelli soon.

“Yes, I am in it, albeit very briefly,” says the 64-year-old former standup comic, author and one-time leader of chart-toppers Fat Les, who was born in that very same Carmarthenshire town.

“I was supposed to have a much more prominent part but other filming commitments got in the way.

“I can’t talk much about it, but what I will say is I’ve read the script and it’s very good, really funny.”

So his drug-addled farmer looks likely to make a comeback then?

“I’m not telling you that, ha,” laughs Keith, dad of pop star Lily Allen. He also stars in the ’40s gothic psychodrama Gaslight at the New Theatre in Cardiff later this month.

Bashfulness aside, it’s welcome news for fans of the 1997 cult film.

Directed once again by Keith’s brother Kevin Allen and entitled Tin Town, it’s said to centre around the legalisation of cannabis and gets its name from Llanelli’s historical association with the tinplate industry.

“I was looking for a new hook and with the political reality that is going on now, it just feels like the right time to write a sequel,” Kevin revealed at the Lord Mayor’s Summer Honour’s Ball in Swansea last July.

“It never felt right to do during the Blair years – it wouldn’t have made sense.”

Gaslight is at the New Theatre in Cardiff from March 14 to 18. For tickets, visit www.newtheatre cardiff.co.uk
