Wales On Sunday

How they rated

-

LUKASZ FABIANSKI

An exemplary outing from the keeper. Came with real authority to claim several threatening balls into his box, and was assured in dealing with all other challenges posed to him by Stoke. Also did not have to lay a hand on Arnautovic’s wayward penalty.

KYLE NAUGHTON

Better than against Watford or West Ham but is still a man clearly struggling for confidence. He made some good forays forward in the early going as Swansea came out of the traps fast, but that faded and he was wayward in his passing.

FEDERICO FERNANDEZ

He got lucky as Arnautovic failed to punish his clumsy tackle on Shaqiri, but otherwise the Argentinian was excellent. Strode out with the ball when circumstances required and made countless headers, clearances and blocks.

ALFIE MAWSON

Bounced back well from his Watford error. Not as secure as Fernandez but seemed to enjoy his battle with Peter Crouch and made several crucial headed clearances, aprticularly during a nervy spell before half-time.

STEPHEN KINGSLEY

Was hesitant to venture too far forward as Shaqiri gave him a hard time as Stoke clearly targeted his flank. But the young Scot stuck at his task and can be content with his solid afternoon’s work.

LEON BRITTON

“There’s only one Leon Britton” sang the Jack Army following his late withdrawal. It’s hard to disagree on this evidence. Set the tone early and used all of his nous and talent to lead his side to a crucial victory. Inspirational.

LEROY FER

Only lasted 20 minutes after an awkward fall. Had made a decent start without really catching the eye.

GYLFI SIGURDSSON

Corner was spot on for Llorente’s goal and he was a constant threat. A few half chances never quite fell for him, but put in his usual shift and again highlighted his importance.

JORDAN AYEW

Probably his best game in a Swansea shirt. Enjoyed having a foil to play off in Llorente and was free to run the channels and stretch play. Still likes a few too many touches - as he did when he wasted a great chance to free the Spaniard – but a good performance.

FERNANDO LLORENTE

Responded to the criticism he has faced with a fine display. Took his header superbly and put a real shift in before Clement withdrew him for Van der Hoorn. This is the Llorente Swansea will need in the coming weeks.
