BRIDGEND Town, champions two seasons ago stayed on top of the South Wales Premier Cricket League thanks to a winning draw at their closest rivals Port Talbot yesterday.

In a gripping top of the table battle at the New Mansel the Steelmen held on for the draw with just one wicket remaining.

It was a not a game for the faint hearted as it was obvious from early afternoon that it could have swung either way but Port Talbot will be the happier with the outcome.

Put into bat Bridgend scored 202 for 8 with Sam Wood hitting a splendid 81 including ten fours and one six while Alex Jones blasted a quick-fire 33.

At one stage it looked as though Port Talbot would knock off the runs but they lost two wickets in one over and struggled afterwards,just managing to hold by their fingertips.

Anthony Thomas was the top Port Talbot batsman hitting 87 including nine fours and two sixes.

There was also a winning draw for Penarth and Pontarddul­ais who held on at 156-8 in response to Penarth’s 174-9.

Neath are still looking for their first win of the season were humbled by Cardiff at the Gnoll being skittled out for a paltry 41 in 22 overs.

They crashed to a seven-wicket defeat after being put into bat by the capital city club.

Only one Neath player – opener Steffan Jones – reached double figures before being caught by Steffan Jones off the bowling of James Lewis.

Lewis and Christian Edwards did most of the damage taking seven wickets between them.

Cardiff lost three wickets on their way to victory with Alex Milton and Greg Holmes being at the crease at the close.

All three Cardiff wickets were taken by Neil Brand as the visitors maintain a lofty position in the League moving into second spot close on the heels of Bridgend.

Mumbles kept Ynysygerwn rooted to the foot of the table as they romped to a seven-wicket success at Marespool.

Winless Ynys put into bat were skittled out for 112 in 37.4 overs with Gareth Grant top scoring with 51.

Mumbles passed the target for the loss of three wickets with Max Phillips undefeated on 66 and Conor Stone on 27.

Richard Grant took two for 26 and the other wicket was captured by Ryan Sylvester.

In the second division St Fagans trounced Ynystawe by ten wickets having put their opponents into bat.

The Swansea Valley side were dismissed for 127 with Tom DEavies top scoring with 44 before being clean bowled by Gareth Weatherall.

St Fagans cruised past the target without losing a wicket. Chris Lawlor was undefeated on 62 and Gareth Rees on 53.

Ammanford’s scheduled match against Newport was called off because of an unfit ground.

Miskin Manor got home by seven runs against Carmarthen Wanderers thanks largely to a contributi­on of 62 by Daxesh Dave.
