THESE were the scenes as thunder and lightning hit parts of Wales during the early hours of Saturday. Videos and pictures caught the dramatic thunderstorms across the country, which came after the country had basked in warm sun in recent days.

Porthcawl amateur photographer Tony John, 45, who runs Finnegans fish and chip shop, grabbed his camera at 3am and headed down to a shelter on the seafront, where he managed to capture spectacular images as the storm drifted down the Bristol Channel.

Welsh weather presenter Derek Brockway tweeted during the early hours of Saturday that there had been recent reports of lightning and said: “Satellite shows a huge thunder cloud spreading north and covering #Wales.”

Images and videos of the thunder and lightning were also shared across social media.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for rain remains in place for parts of Wales.

The warning, which covers South Wales, is in place all day today and lasts until 4pm tomorrow.

The Met Office website states: “Further areas of heavy rain will spread north-eastward through Sunday and into Monday, with some locally torrential downpours and thunder possible.

“This could result in some disruption, with sudden flooding of roads, transport routes, homes and businesses possible locally.

“However, given the hit and miss nature of the heavy rain and thunderstorms, many places will likely see little or no impacts.”

Throughout the rest of next week, the weather is set to gradually improve, with Tuesday expected to be “generally cloudy and damp but brighter and warmer on Wednesday with sunny spells”.
