SOUTH WALES ASSOCIATION

-

LAST season’s runners-up Dafen picked up their first win of the new South Wales Cricket Association Division One campaign at the fifth time of asking as they beat promoted Merthyr Tydfil by 98 runs.

The foundation for the victory was set by a 114-run stand for the second wicket between Jeremy Dawes and David Williams that set the hosts on their way to 250-3 declared off 46 overs.

Opener Dawes (105no) hit 12 fours and a six as he carried his bat while Williams, batting at three, thrashed nine fours and three maximums in his 57-ball 75.

Merthyr, who won the Division Two title last term, are still looking for the first win after they were bowled out for 152 in reply, with Philip George bagging himself a five-for.

Meanwhile early leaders Bronwydd continue to set the pace at the top of the table after they made it five wins out of five with a 113-run victory at winless Llandysul.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bronwydd put 239-8 on the scoreboard – and that total proved to be more than enough with Llandysul all out for 126 in reply.

In Division Two, table-topping Morriston made it four wins of out five as they thumped Felinfoel by nine wickets in a low-scoring encounter.

The match was reduced to 41 overs a side after a rain-delayed start but those lost overs hardly mattered after Felinfoel were skittled out for just 65 after being put in.

Stuart Johnson was the standout Morriston bowler with 4-16, including three wickets in a single over, before Mark Whittaker slapped seven fours in an unbeaten 39 as the hosts cruised it.
