Getting back to nature

or at the growing number of yurt and teepee sites that are cropping up around the UK. Caravanning Another option, of course, as an antidote to hotels and apartments, is caravanning. A touring caravan offers the freedom to travel wherever you wish, while there is less work involved in bedding down at a static version. Both have their fans.

The National Association of Caravan Owners has advice for those thinking about buying a static caravan.

Costs after paying for your caravan? There is the pitch fee, and there may be other associated costs such as gas, electric, insurance, water and rates. They should all be in a written agreement or contract, but check out the terms.

Insuring your caravan? Most parks make it a condition of your pitch licence to insure your caravan or lodge. It is important that you have public liability insurance.

Renting or sub-letting the caravan? Parks generally encourage this as a way for owners to subsidise their pitch fees and other costs. Seek independent advice before purchasing as a “buy to let”.

Loaning your caravan to friends and family? This is one of the key reasons most people buy a holiday caravan or holiday home.

Financing your caravan? Most parks will have a tie-in with a finance company that will assist with spreading the cost. Beware of high interest payments and seek independent advice before purchasing with a finance agreement.

TV licence for your caravan? As long as you have a TV licence registered at an address somewhere in the UK, then you do not need another one registered at your holiday caravan.

Then there is hitting the road with your caravan in tow.

Make sure you compile a checklist and on it should be: a fire extinguisher, wheel chocks, a caravan jack, a sway control device, towing mirrors, extra coolant and oil, a spare fan belt, and insulation tape.

Ensure the safety and security of your van. Among the checks are ensuring that the towing aid is fitted correctly, drawers and other loose items are secure, and windows and doors are locked. Also, remove wheel chocks and the jockey wheel – or secure it – and raise the caravan’s steps.

Be mindful of traffic queuing up behind you, try not to swerve if animals stray onto the road and be aware of side winds caused by large vehicles.
