Pistols gig gets fashion salute

-

ONE of the most infamous gigs in Welsh rock history has been celebrated in the form of a T-shirt.

The night the Sex Pistols came to Caerphilly to play The Castle Cinema has forever been enshrined in the annals of rock ’n’ roll folklore.

It was the notorious show, on Tuesday, December 14, 1976, that was marked by protests – and carol-singing.

The gig saw religious groups, carol singers and local councillors voicing their moral outrage at the arrival of the tour in their town days after the band’s equally notorious expletive-strewn appearance on the Bill Grundy Show.

Less than half of the planned 20 dates went ahead, as the Pistols were banned from so many venues following the TV moment that shocked a nation.

Culture fashion brand Relish has produced the limited edition run of T-shirts, which have flown out since they went on sale via the brand’s Facebook page this week.

“Lots of middle-aged people of a certain vintage probably said they went to that gig and many probably didn’t,” said 47-year-old Darren Williams from Cardiff, the man behind Relish.

“I was young at the time, so it was four or five years too early for me, but for kids like me there were a generation of older brothers handing down copies of Never Mind The B******* and having their minds being blown away by it.”

Darren said the reaction has been fantastic since he released an image of the T-shirt on the brand’s Facebook page.

“The reaction has been very good. The punky colour of the ticket looks great on a black tee. You’ve got the local angle that people love – and what a line-up of bands that was, as well. Who wouldn’t have wanted to see that line-up then? I’ve got a load of old punk heads who love what I do. So I’ve produced some double and triple XLs for the old fellas with a belly. But we’ve got a lot of younger kids into it, as well.”

Darren launched the brand two years ago and his quirky culture and retro designs have become hugely popular.

The latest release is a tribute to much-loved ’80s sportswear retailer Olympus.
