WHO WILL IT BE?

- RACHEL MAINWARING Reporter rachel.mainwaring@walesonline.co.uk

IT HAS been a long wait – but it’s almost over. Viewers are set to find out who Peter Capaldi’s replacement will be later today when the new Doctor is revealed after the Wimbledon men’s final.

Capaldi will step down as the Doctor at the end of the year and his regeneration scene is expected to take place during the Christmas special.

But who will replace him? Here are the current bookies’ favourites to bag the new role... Will we ever see a female Doctor Who?

Well, some think the Fleabag creator and new Han Solo movie star could be in with a chance.

The 31-year-old actress starred in Broadchurch as junior barrister Abby Thompson and she won a Bafta for Best Female Comedy Performance for her role in Fleabag. Has the former Death in Paradise star swapped Caribbean beaches for the Tardis?

The 44-year-old is best known for his role as awkward DCI Humphrey Goodman in Death in Paradise and has starred in a number of roles since the early 1990s.

He was also known for playing Adam in the BT adverts for seven years.

It has been claimed that Kris is the new Doctor Who and he has already begun filming for the new series.

“Kris Marshall has already joined the cast and will regenerate at the end of this series, not in the Christmas special,” a source told the Mirror. She played Beth Latimer in Broadchurch and has also played roles in St Trinians, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Adult Life Skills, Assets and Marchlands.

Jodie has risen in the odds to be in with a great chance of being the next Doctor Who, closely behind current favourites Kris Marshall and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Kris Marshall Jodie Whittaker Michaela Coel

Michaela Coel is the writer and star of award-winning drama Chewing Gum.

Despite denying rumours that she will be taking over the controls of the Tardis any time soon, some serious money was splashed on the rising star, putting her hot on the heels of the other possibles.

Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer may be best known as Margaery Tyrell, whose time in Westeros has recently come to a close.

Since her time on Game of Thrones, Natalie emerged as a front runner in the race for control of the Tardis.

Tom Rosenthal

Comedian Tom Rosenthal is now said to be the surprising frontrunner to take on the much-coveted role. The son of sports broadcaster Jim Rosenthal was nominated for a British Comedy Award as best breakthrough act in 2011 but is probably best known for his appearance alongside Inbetweeners star Simon Bird in Channel 4 comedy Friday Night Dinner.

He also appeared in ITV2 sitcom Plebs and has had more serious parts too – most notably as Gary Thorpe in the second series of ITV’s Broadchurch and playing Sam Roth in drama Breathless, also on ITV.

While their identity currently remains a mystery, the actor set to take over from Peter Capaldi will do so this December in the series’ traditional Christmas episode, which will see incumbent Doctor Capaldi and series showrunner Steven Moffat say their goodbyes to the longrunning BBC sci-fi series.

The actor and new head writer Chris Chibnall, of Broadchurch fame, will be taking over for the episode’s final scene before returning for a full series next year.
