FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

-

PENYBONT, who finished last season very strongly to take runners-up spot in the Nathaniel Car Sales Welsh League behind Barry Town last season, started the new campaign by coming from behind to pip Monmouth Town 2-1 at the Kymco Stadium.

But the downside was that they ended the game with 10 men after the dismissal in the closing stages of James Barry for foul play.

After a goalless first-half, Elliot Ford gave Monmouth the lead on 55 minutes only for playermanager Rhys Griffiths and Joe Hopkins to give the hosts the points.

Llanelli made a stunning start to life in the top flight as they demolished Taffs Well 5-2, with former Swansea City star Lee Trundle, scorer of 51 goals last season, bagging a brace.

Goytre United proved far too strong for Afan Lido and coasted to a 6-1 win, with Dale Griffith converting two penalties.

Gwent side Goytre were also in great form yesterday as they crushed Caerau Ely 4-1 thanks to braces by Dan McDonald and Lewis Sommers.

Cwmamman United and Briton Ferry Llansawel, both promoted last season to Division One, fought out a 1-1 draw, Ashley Curtis netting for Cwmamman and Luke Harris for their rivals.

Pontypridd Town hit the jackpot in the second division thrashing AFC Porth 7-1, while Team Swansea made a successful debut in the Welsh League, winning 2-0 at Pontyclun courtesy of goals by Nick Hyden and Adam Orme. STEVE TOMMASEN bagged a second half winner for Airbus UK Broughton as they began life in the Huws Gray Alliance with a 1-0 home victory over Llandudno Junction.

Rhyl, meanwhile, the other side to come down from the Welsh Premier, had to settle for 1-1 draw at home with Guilsfield.

It was a tale of two penalties at Belle Vue where Asa Hamilton netted from the spot to put the visitors ahead on 53 minutes – only for Mark Connolly to level 13 minutes later.

The big winners of the day were Holywell Town who ran out 5-1 winners at Denbigh Town.

Steve Lewis and Jamie McDaid both scored twice, while Shaun Tuck netted their other goal. Jake Eyre replied.

Meanwhile, goals in each half from Darren Thomas and Jamie Breese fired Caernarfon Town to a 2-1 victory at Penrhyncoch – for whom Stef Davies found the net.

Second-half goals from Joe Chaplin and Chris Jones set Porthmadog on their way to a 2-0 home victory over Gresford Atheltic, while Mel McGuinness’ goal turned out to be decisive for Holyhead Hotspur in a 1-0 home win over Ruthin Town.
