Teen’s hypothermia after Snowdon underpants stunt

-

A 19-YEAR-OLD who climbed Snowdon dressed in only his underpants ended up suffering from hypothermia.

Nathan French had to call the emergency services after he finished the 1,085m climb and became unwell at the summit.

An ambulance crew was called to treat the student after his blood sugar and blood pressure dropped and he began to suffer from hypothermia.

However, the teenager has no regrets over the bizarre challenge – which nearly left him in hospital – because the “stupid” stunt was all to raise money for charity.

Nathan, from Halewood, Liverpool, said: “For a while I have wanted to do something to raise money for Dementia UK.

“My nan has dementia so it is something that is close to my heart.”

Nathan, who is studying sport, nutrition and health at university, said: “This is the first time I have ever climbed a mountain like this. I keep fit and I am always in the gym but this was different.

“It was very cold and it got progressively colder the higher up we got.

“The hardest part, and when I really started to struggle, was when I reached the top, but my dad, who did it with me, was behind me and I had to stop and wait for him. That was a very long and cold five minutes waiting for him.”

Nathan who raised £950 for charity from the climb last Saturday, added: “The paramedic obviously said I was very silly but he understood why I had done it when I said it was for charity.

“It was very emotional completing it and I cried at the top because it does mean a lot to raise this money.

“It is hard to raise awareness of dementia but I am just going to do what I can to raise money to try and help those with this terrible illness.”
