Volvo puts a price on its XC40 baby SUV

VOLVO’S new XC40 “baby” SUV will be priced from £27,905 when it arrives in the UK early next year.

The new model is Volvo’s first premium compact SUV and is also the first model to be built on the company’s allnew CMA platform.

It is designed primarily for city use and features much of the advanced connectivi­ty, entertainm­ent and safety technology from Volvo’s newest range of motors such as the larger XC60 and XC90.

The XC40 is also powered by Volvo’s 2.0-litre Drive-E engines with front or allwheel drive and ether manual or automatic gearboxes.

At launch three petrol and two diesel engines will be available, with power ranging from 150 to 250bbhp.

The T3 XC40 is available with frontwheel drive, while the D3 is offered in front or all-wheel-drive form. The T4, T5 and D4 come with all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. An automatic gearbox is also available on D3 versions.

Entry level Momentum specificat­ion includes Volvo’s Sensus nine-inch touch- screen that works with a voice-activated control system.

Other features include sat nav with real-time traffic informatio­n and lifetime map updates. The system also allows access to a range of web apps including Spotify, TuneIn, Google Local Search and Yelp.

Also standard are LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch driver’s informatio­n display and rear parking sensors. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 21-inch alloys.

The first XC40s in the UK will be the T5 and D4 First Editions, which are based on R-Design Pro versions but with more equipment as standard.

Highlights include the Xenium pack, Pilot Assist, a power-operated tailgate with hands-free opening and closing, heated rear seats, wireless mobile phone charging and the Harmon Kardon sound system.
