CYCLIST DIES AFTER CAR COLLIDES WITH GROUP

ACYCLIST died and two others were injured after a car collided with a group of three riders. 26-year-old man from Cardiff was declared dead at the scene and two other cyclists were taken by ambulance to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend following the crash yesterday.

The incident happened on the A48 between the Cowbridge bypass and Pentre Meyrick at 7.20am.

A police spokesman said a 36-year-old man from the area had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The other two cyclists were said to have “non life-threatenin­g injuries”.

In a statement a South Wales Police spokesman said: “Police in the Vale of Glamorgan are investigat­ing a fatal road traffic collision which happened at around 7.20am this morning when a white Skoda Octavia collided with a group of three cyclists on the A48 between the Cowbridge bypass and Pentre Meyrick.

“A 36-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“Officers investigat­ing the incident are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone who may have seen the manner in which the car was being driven prior to the collision, to contact South Wales Police on 101 or anonymousl­y via Crimestopp­ers on 0800 555111 and quote reference 1700418785.”

The road was closed in both directions for around five hours to allow investigat­ions to take place.
